Difference between LED lamps and other lamps
LED lamps are used to illuminate the home, office, industrial premises or the street.
The light source in them is a diode consisting aof tiny crystals. In other types of lamps, light radiates from a hot coil, gas or mercury.
One of the popular questions: how does the LED lamp differ from the LED. The answer is: nothing. These are two names of one kind of lamps. The abbreviation LED stands for Light Emitting Diode – a light emitting diode. In different descriptions we are talking about the same lamps.
What is the difference between LED lamps from each other?
They differ in power, color temperature range, resistance to external influences. In comparison with other types of lamps, they have many advantages: they work longer, do not emit toxic substances, work at a voltage of 180 to 260 V, consume less electricity.
What makes LED lamps different from other light sources?
Often, LED lamps are compared with conventional incandescent lamps, halogen and fluorescent counterparts. So, let’s see how the LED lamp differs from the ordinary on.
The first is the difference between LED lamps and incandescent lamps – the luminous element. Inside the bulb of an incandescent bulb is a spiral of metal that emits light, red hot. Such devices are cheap, suitable for most lamps, instantly lit when turned on.
The disadvantages of this type of lighting:
Short run time. The lamp is designed for about 1,000 hours of work, while the LED has a life span of about 100,000 hours.
High power consumption. Only one tenth of the energy consumed is converted into light, the remaining 90% is consumed as heat.
To understand the difference between LED lamps and fluorescent lamps, you need to know how they work. In LED lamps the diode shines. A fluorescent lamp is a tube filled with phosphor. It consumes less electricity than an incandescent lamp and lasts longer: from 2,000 to 20,000 hours.
But the fluorescent lamp has a number of problems:
Mercury content – from 10 mg to 1 g per flask. The lamp is toxic and dangerous to the environment.
Flicker. The lamp is sensitive to current drops. Constant flicker irritates and tires eyesight.
Burnout. The phosphor is produced over time – the spectrum of the lamp changes and the light output decreases.
What is the difference between an LED and an ultraviolet lamp? The latter works in the same way as luminescent. UV light is produced when electromagnetic discharges ignite mercury vapors in a flask. For the manufacture of such lamps using special glass, which transmits ultraviolet light.
The main danger of this light source is mercury vapor, which is released into the air when the bulb is heated. And if it breaks it will be necessary to clean the room from the toxic metal.
What is the difference between fluorescent lamps and halogen lamps: first of all – the principle of operation. “Galogenka” is essentially an incandescent lamp, the bulb of which is filled with halogen vapors (bromine or iodine). This increases its life to 4,000 hours.
Disadvantages of halogen lamps:
Strong heat. The temperature of the bulb rises due to the gases inside. It can burn or cause a fire.
Fragility. You can take it only by the body. If you touch the surface of the lamp, it will blow.
How does the LED lamp differ from energy saving: the main competitor
LED bulbs are often confused with energy saving, although the two types are completely different. “Housekeepers” have long been the best on the market, but LEDs quickly outperformed them by efficiency.
An energy saving or compact fluorescent lamp uses five times less energy than an incandescent lamp with the same brightness. But it has its own characteristics:
Inconvenient flask. A large pear or spiral often does not fit into the ceiling and does not look very attractive.
Warm up time. At the moment of turning on the light shines more dimly, gradually warming up.
Fluctuation of light. The faint glimmer causes eye strain and headache.
The main disadvantage of LED lamps in comparison with other types of lighting is the high cost. But this is offset by these advantages:
Efficiency. Incandescent bulbs burn out after a few months, and the LEDs work up to 5 years.
Resistance to external influences. The diode will not deteriorate in the cold or in the rain. Operating temperature: –20 to +40. Durable case protects it during the fall.
Security. The lamp does not contain toxic substances and does not heat up to a temperature that can cause a fire.
LED lamps are installed at home, in schools and hospitals, in workshops of factories, in playgrounds and along the roadway. For each goal there is a suitable diode.
